Kendal Model Aero Club (KMAC) is one of the older model flying clubs in the country and can trace its origins back as far as 1936.
It is a flying club (currently with about 90 members) that caters for most, if not all, branches of the hobby. However the main focus is on radio control fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, with a smattering of free flight flying and radio control slope soaring. There is an increasing interest in electric-powered aircraft of all sorts, probably as a result of modern technology and falling prices making them ever more practical. It would be good to start a control line section - We have the space!
KMAC has been affiliated to the BMFA - British Model Flying Association - for many years now (Club No. 0578) with all the benefits that this brings, from Insurance cover for members to advice and recommendations on safety.
We have a good flying site in the Lyth Valley, set in open fields with a mown grass take-off and landing strip. Even if you don't like flying, the scenery is sensational! Slope soarers are catered for on a nearby escarpment, as well as a number of other slope sites in the area and thermal soaring (given the weather!) is possible at the main flying site, using bungee, hand tow or power-assist launches.
Novice flyers........ Yes we cater for you too! We have fixed wing trainers (together with buddy facilities) for the use of members. The club actively encourages training, to enable flyers to pass their 'A' standard competence test and has its own BMFA Qualified Examiners and Instructors.
Visitors are welcome and are able to fly by prior arrangement (See "Visitors" page)
In the Winter months, we have Indoor Flying sessions each month (except December) and occasional club nights are held.
